Stewardship – the Human Resources Perspective

Stewardship the HR Perspective

The City recently introduced its new SERVE value statements to the organization. During the rollout, the Human Resources (HR) team started reflecting on those values (Stewardship Engaged  Respectful Visionary Excellence); particularly on how “stewardship” impacts the department and our various roles within the City. While we strive to ensure a good compensation and benefits package for all, we are mindful that the revenue source for this comes from taxpayer funds.

SELF-INSURED HEALTH PLAN

The City manages its health plan by having a self-insured model, which essentially means Plano pays the claims of its members directly. We pay UnitedHealthcare for access to its insurance network and to administer the plan, but the City bears the risk of the claims. Most employees do a great job of being good stewards of these funds by utilizing various services, such as Compass Health Professionals. By checking prices before having a medical procedure, the City and its employees have collectively saved $4.3 million by using Compass. This means we’ve been able to maintain a relatively flat healthcare trend, resulting in only one premium increase in eight years.

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS RISING COSTS

While our medical trend has been fairly flat, the City has experienced a significant increase in prescription drug spending. Most employees don’t realize drugs cost significantly more than the employee’s co-pay. In some cases, a 30-day, single drug supply can cost up to $30,000. The HR team is currently meeting with each department to discuss how employees can manage drug costs by checking for cheaper alternatives. GoodRx.com is a great place to see the underlying cost of medicines.  Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor for a generic prescription.

HEALTHY EMPLOYEES = LESS SPENDING BY BOTH CITY AND EMPLOYEE

Our health impacts so many things in our lives, including absenteeism, performance at work, medical claims, workers’ compensation, long-term disability, etc. We’re fortunate to offer many wellness benefits, such as Real Appeal, Weight Watchers at Work, onsite workout facilities and discounted recreation center memberships. Healthy employees spend less money from their pocket and also spend less City funds.
