Parks Division Staff Shine at Safety Awards Breakfast

Parks guys WEB

As Tina Turner first sang in 1989, “You’re simply the best…better than all the rest!” The Parks division let their staff know just how appreciated they are at its annual Service and Safety Awards breakfast on August 23. The ceremony at Oak Point Nature & Retreat Center was catered by Ye Ole Butcher Shop and well attended.

Park Services Manager Ron Smith put the program together with Ed Voss, Jeff Schwartz and Doug Green. He said, “We are proud to recognize our employees who maintain a high level of safety and who look out for one another.”

There are 132 employees in this division of Parks and Recreation with positions ranging from equipment operators, field and ground maintenance workers, irrigation technicians and landscape architects to urban foresters and administrative support members. Senior Administrative Assistants Sheila William and Pam Thompson compiled the honoree list for the 2017-18 year. Crews were honored for:

  • Years of Perfect Attendance by Jeff Schwartz
  • Safe Driver Years by Doug Green
  • Milestone Years and Special Recognitions by Ed Voss

Risk Management’s Tim Billingham applauded 95 employees for years of consecutively driving city vehicles without avoidable accidents. Those with 15+ years incident-free are:

The 2019 Employee Safety Olympics winning Parks Athletics crew (The Plano A’s) received more swag during the breakfast. Each team member got embroidered jackets to wear as they boast about being champions. In the parking lot after the breakfast, team leader Byron Robinson engaged in a little pre-2020 Olympics trash-talk saying, “The city hall teams were slackers and need to step-up their game. We came in second in FOUR events and STILL won overall!”

Sounds like “game on” Team Plano!
