The governor signed House Bill 1631 on June 2, banning the use of traffic signal enforcement systems. Since the bill passed with 2/3’s vote in both chambers, the law goes into effect immediately. The Governor has allowed affected cities to complete their current contracts. Our Police department’s contract with the vendor allows for terminating the contract based on any change in the law.
Texas is the largest state to ban red light cameras, a traffic safety program which records license plates and automatically issues violation notices. Plano has used this system since 2006. At present only 11 states prohibit red light cameras.
Long running debates about the system’s fairness are at the core of state lawmakers’ decision to do away with this traffic crash deterrent.
Red light camera enforcement in Plano showed reduction in crashes at the targeted intersections. Plano stands by exercising our right to terminate the contract now and is working out the details with the vendor.
