What is the Computer Refresh Project?

We are approved to undergo a major upgrade to all City computers – both PCs and laptops. Technology Services is excited about what this means – everyone gets a new machine equipped with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2016.

Your help is needed to ensure we don’t lose any critical data when the computers are replaced....and to make this an easy transition for all. 

To prepare for this citywide computer refresh project, there is a simple strategy: CLEAN. MOVE. SAVE. This is a big job, but a necessary one to improve our technology and the services we provide. With everyone’s cooperation, we'll enjoy the benefits of this effort and minimize any negative impact to our daily operations.

Computer Refresh Dos & Don'ts

DO DON'T
Clean or remove ALL personal data from all computer drives; take them home on a thumb drive. Move everything from desktop; data files, docs and photos ONLY. Do not email files home; use thumb drive.
Move work files from desktop to temporary "L" drive folder. Move programs (MS Word, Excel, etc.) from desktop to "L" drive.
Save your favorite website links. Copy or move shortcuts.
Clear area of personal items/devices prior to computer arrival (photo frames, earbuds, thumb drives, cups, card readers, bluetooth mouse, fans, etc.), so techs can swap computers easily. Wait until the last minute!

Training

All employees are strongly encouraged to attend a Computer Refresh Training class on Windows 10 and Microsoft 16 prior to or during the week you're slated to receive your new PC. The sessions are held in the TS Training Room (1117 E. 15th Street, across from Municipal Center). The training sessions last 2-hours. 

         *   Classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays  
         *   3 sessions offered each day; 40 seats available per session
         *   Sign up through PeopleSoft. Course code supplied with deployment date
         *   Training Sessions:  8:30-10:30 am, 11 am-1 pm and 2:30-4:30 pm

NOTE:  If you miss your assigned in-person training week or simply want additional Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2016 information, QuickHelp online training is available 24/7.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER DEPLOYMENT SCHEDULE:  Tuesdays & Thursdays

Once the rollout begins, Technology Services will provide each department with a deployment date for the exchange of staff computers – replacements are done on Tuesdays and Thursdays – with approximately 45 machines swapped out per day.
